Los Cristianos

Seaside town ideal for your winter holiday

Los Cristianos is a larger holiday resort in the south of Tenerife, which has grown from a fishing village and over time has become the most popular tourist resort on the island. You will still find many houses built in a typical Canarian architectural style, but there are also many modern buildings.

The first mention of the port of Los Cristianos dates back to the sixteenth century. With time Los Cristianos became an important port, but the city remained uninhabited until the nineteenth century, as the port was often attacked by pirates. It was not until the 19th century that the city´s population began to grow, and in the twentieth century, the city expanded into what is now a tourist resort with hotels and streets full of restaurants and shops.

Beachfront in Los Cristianos

There are several very nice beaches with golden sand imported from Sahara in Los Cristianos. A long promenade along the beaches connects Los Cristianos and Las Americas. There are many restaurants, shops and small supermarkets on the promenade and these establishments are all competing for the best prices so you will always find a cheap restaurant with good food. In my opinion, this promenade is the cheapest place to eat and drink in a restaurant on the island. Menu prices start at 10 euros and a pint may cost you as little as 1 euro! When you walk along the promenade from Los Cristianos to Las Americas, you will soon pass Playa de las Vistas beach, which is accessible to people with reduced mobility and lifeguards have equipment without which many of these people will never be able to get into the water. There is also large shaded area with a plank floor for hiding from the hot Canarian sun that can be accessed by a boardwalk. In Los Cristianos you will find everything tourists hungry for the sun and beaches need: golden beaches, pleasant weather suitable for year-round swimming, hotels, bars, restaurants, small supermarkets, souvenir shops and nightclubs.

Winter holidays in Los Cristianos

If you are coming to Tenerife to escape the long winter, then I highly recommend staying in Los Cristianos (along with Las Americas and Costa Adeje). The climate is pleasant and warm all year round because it is not usually windy, so you can enjoy the sun, beaches and swimming all year round, with few exceptions. Please note that in January and February the water temperature can only be 16-18 degrees, so most people cannot stay in the water for too long.

Market in Los Cristianos

The market, which is the largest on the island, takes place in Los Cristianos on Tuesdays and Sundays from 10:00 to 14:00. You will find there everything from souvenirs to clothes, and if you like markets, be sure to come and see it. It is located on Avenida Juan Carlos I. This market is very busy and there are warnings about pickpockets, so watch out for your wallets and handbags!

The port of Los Cristianos

The port of Los Cristianos is located right next to the main beaches, so you can watch the big Fred Olsen and Armas ferries arrive from nearby islands and see cars and lorries enter or leave the ferry while sunbathing on the beach. Many other boats also leave the port of Los Cristianos to take tourists on trips to see dolphins and whales. There are also glass-bottomed boat trips and diving trips. Here you can find and book many boat trips and other activities such as diving or visiting the water parks.

 Boat transport to nearby islands

You can book a ticket with ferry companies Fred Olsen and Armas to take you to other Canary islands. Fred Olsen travels to La Gomera and La Palma. Naviera Armas will take you to El Hierro, La Gomera and La Palma. The journey to El Hierro takes 2.5 hours, the journey to La Gomera an hour and La Palma can be reached in four hours. Prices may vary, so we prefer not to list them, it also depends a lot on whether you are a resident on the island, because residents have a big discount on travel both between the islands and between the Canary Islands and mainland Spain.

Visit nearby water parks and zoos

If you come to Tenerife with children, you will be delighted to take them to one of the water parks or zoo gardens. Aqualand, Siam Park and Jungle Park are close to Los Cristianos and can be easily reached with a free tourist bus.
