Los Gigantes

Small tourist town set in beautiful surroundings

Los Gigantes is a popular tourist resort on the west coast of Tenerife, located next to the impressive 500 to 800 m high cliff of Acantilados de Los Gigantes, which juts steeply from the sea. Los Gigantes was built in the 1960s and 1970s and has a calmer and more relaxed atmosphere than the large tourist resorts in the south of the island.

Small harbour surrounded by shops and restaurants

Los Gigantes has a lovely marina full of small yachts, surrounded by shops and restaurants. There is a small black sand beach with a high cliff above it near the marina. You can see the Los Gigantes cliff from several places, but the best view of it is from the boat. If you buy one of the boat trips, you will see not only the reef, but also whales and dolphins, many of which are endemic here, as almost a third of the world´s whales and dolphins often pass around the Canary Islands near Los Gigantes. The Guanche people, the original inhabitants of the island, considered the cliff sacred and believed that the cliff marks the end of the world.

Natural tidal pool

Not far from the marina, there is one place we really like to go in Los Gigantes – the tidal pool. When it is low tide, it is a pleasant place to swim in its crystal-clear water. However, at high tide, swimming in it can be a bit dangerous and you have to be careful that the wave does not push you onto a rock. Sometimes it is shocking to see tourists who walk along the slippery edge of the tidal pool, knowing that if they slip they may fall down the tidal pool onto the rocks bellow, where the sea is so strong that nobody will be able to save them.

Boat trips

Many boats sail out to sea from nearby marina in Los Gigantes, taking tourists on trips where they can see dolphins and whales. There are also glass-bottomed boat trips and diving trips. Here you can find and book one of the many boat trips or other activities from diving to visiting the water park.
