San Cristóbal de la Laguna

City on the north of the island with rich history

San Cristóbal de La Laguna is a city in the north of Tenerife near Santa Cruz de Tenerife and it is considered the cultural centre of the island.

The historic city centre of La Laguna is on the list of the UNESCO´s World Heritage Sites

The historic city centre of La Laguna is very well preserved and the city is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city was founded in the 15th century and its layout has become a model layout for the design of new cities in America. The city centre is full of elegant historic buildings built between the 15th and 17th century. There are many churches and palaces. The Cathedral in Plaza de los Remedios was built in the early 20th century and its neoclassical façade was inspired by the Cathedral of Pamplona. Inside you will find a 16th-century Baroque retabric and paintings by Cristobal Hernandez de Quintano. In the cathedral lie the remains of Alonso Fernandez de Lugo, the founder of the city. Not far from the cathedral is the Iglesia de la Concepcion, built in 1502. It has a magnificent tower and a wooden Mudejar ceiling. The Mudejar style is a mixture of Moorish and European styles, which is very common in the city. The church has a high bell tower, which you can climb up and admire the beautiful view of the city.

Another square worth visiting is the Plaza del Adelantado. This beautiful square has a town hall and monastery with an attractive balcony and the impressive Palacio de Nava. If you like markets, visit Plaza del Cristo, where there are regular farmer´s markets. Another monument you should not miss is the Roman Catholic church Real Santuario del Santísimo Cristo de La Laguna.

Traditional city festivities

San Cristobal de La Laguna has great festivals. If possible, visit La Laguna during Easter week. On Good Friday, religious guilds dressed in dark hoods carry the cross through the city´s medieval streets. The Romeria de San Benito Abad pilgrimage, which takes place on the second Sunday in July, is attended by groups from all over the Canary Islands. People dress in traditional clothes, do a parade and dance. La Laguna was the capital of Tenerife until 1821. It is a university town and it houses the oldest university in the Canary Islands. It is a lively city with a vibrant nightlife.

It is often raining in La Laguna

La Laguna is located in the Aguere Valley, at the foot of the Anaga Mountains. The surrounding countryside is beautiful, everything is green, and the views are breath-taking. However, the locals often stay that they would rather live elsewhere on the island because the area is often immersed in low clouds, cold and wet. The morning trip to work or school is therefore not very pleasant. You can never please people with weather, can you?
